Awards season in the beverage industry isn’t about borrowed tuxes, air kisses or four-hour trophy presentations. It’s about what we live for... flavor. The World Beer Championships – America’s oldest international beer and cider competition – takes its flavor evaluations very seriously. Conducted by the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) in Chicago, its blind tasting competition is a year-round process, broken down into intricate categories to test quality and taste. And after its 2015 winners were announced this month, our trophy case got a little more crowded.
Casinos, food, and world class shows. Typical trip to Las Vegas, right? Not this time. WhatsApp. One of the first things that Heineken USA’s new CEO, Ronald den Elzen, did was start a WhatsApp group for the management team. When everyone is traveling and in different time zones, it has been a great way for us to stay connected.

If you find yourself walking really fast even when you’re not in a hurry, then you’re probably from New York City. And like most New Yorkers, if you’re going somewhere too far to walk, you probably take the subway. Venture underground in NYC and you’re bound to encounter sights, sounds (and smells) that are quite memorable, but not necessarily in a good way. Millions of professional women – and men – speak volumes the moment they walk into a meeting without even saying a word. Perceptions are immediately formed and you have just seconds to prove you’re a leader. If your body language suggests nervousness, angst or sternness, you may not be able to wow that audience, close that deal or get that promotion. Sure, some people are born leaders, but it’s rare. For the rest of us, leadership is something we have to hone.
Five HEINEKEN USA employees saved lives last year. Really. That’s not something we take lightly. We provide our employees the opportunity to become CPR certified at our annual company meeting and are proud to announce that 40% of our employees have completed the program. The American Heart Association’s Lane Hughes said, “I know of no other organization that has 40% of employees voluntarily trained in this life-saving skill.” As the entire company gathered last week in Orlando, HUSA was honored with the American Heart Association’s prestigious “Making a Difference” award.
